after a long day scouting for the u.s. nationals our team decided to go outside the tournament grounds for a little target practice . I got dropped off in a back cove that was full of flooded timber. I started working the timber in deep water with no success. the visability was basically nothing on the bottom. in frustration I started to work back to the boat on the far point. I found a nice patch of trees in 30ft and started to swim to them. on my approach to the timber I noticed a large swimming log with a bright yellow tail. it was my first time seeing a gar so I was caught a little off guard. the fish started to drop in depth and swam slowly toward the tree. I took a short breath and dropped about 5ft below the surface and put a nice holding shot into its back just behind the head. the fish gave no fight and I easily swam it back to boat with no issues. apon my arrival to the boat the capt yelled in joy " holy crap that's a big one"! at that point I knew I might have a record.
